Dermal Fillers
Dermal fillers work differently than botox and can be used to reduce deeper lines and wrinkles that remain even when your face is at rest. As your skin ages, it gets thinner - dermal fillers work by adding back some of the lost volume so that deep skin creases do not form. This works particularly well for laughter lines around the mouth. We also use dermal filler to add definition to the edge of the lip area which can get lost with ageing.

Juvederm
For our dermal filler we use Juvederm because it produces the smoothest results allowing for a more natural look whilst also containing small amounts of local anaesthetic which numbs the skin as it is injected.
Juvederm is a highly purified form of a chemical called hyaluronic acid (HA) which is found naturally in the skin. As skin ages, the amount of HA reduces, and is thought to be one of the reasons why older skin appears to be thinner and more prone to wrinkles. By injecting Juvederm into key areas we restore the thickness of the skin where deep skin creases form.
Because Juvederm is so highly purified, the body is slow to remove it and its effects can last up to a year. However, as HA is a natural component of the skin, the body is able to completely clear the product after the effect has worn off.
Juvederm also has the benefit of containing a local anaesthetic which significantly reduces the stinging feeling you often get with other filler injections - this is particularly important in the lips which are a particularly sensitive part of the face.
How long do dermal fillers last?
The benefits of dermal filler with Juvederm are instant and last for around 1 year.
How do I take care of my skin after dermal fillers
There will usually be a minor amount of swelling at the injection sites which will reduce over the next two days.
The most important thing to remember is to keep the injection sites clean.
Ice packs can help with swelling but cover them with clean cling film before applying them to the skin.
Some people find that arnica cream helps with swelling.
Most people find that paracetamol is enough for pain.
Full aftercare instructions are discussed and will be given to all patients following treatment.
What are the side effects of dermal fillers?
We only use semi-permanent fillers because the side effects are rare.
Most commonly side effects include slight bleeding at the injection site, mild bruising, redness, swelling and tenderness. Usually these resolve within two days. The lips can be particularly tender.
Because of the initial bruising we always advise clients to book at least one week before events such as weddings or birthdays.
All side effects are discussed and explained with patients at the initial consultation before any procedure.
